Other People’s Babies

27081_381714816265_41164966265_4346965_1434917_sYou may have noticed by the Ana Ortiz pic where I am cooing over her baby that I LOVE babies.  Don’t want to have any more of my own, mind you, but other people’s babies are wonderful.  My dear friend and master colorist Ryn just had her baby today a gorgeous 8lb boy name Leo.  He is perfect in every way and though I don’t envy the late nights and 2 AM feedings, I also can’t wait to get over to the hospital tomorrow and hold that amazing little guy.   We fed Ryn’s daughter Stella and will continue the tradition by giving Ryn a gift certificate for as much baby food as Leo can eat!

We are finding that more and more grandmothers, aunts and uncles and other folks are giving Jack’s Harvest gift certificates as gifts.  Send us an email or call and we’ll print up a card and send it to your recipient who can just email us when they are ready to order and we’ll take care of the rest.  The food will arrive packed on dry ice and can be shipped to anywhere in the country via Amazon.com.  It is an especially thoughtful gift for second time mommies and daddies who have all the gear they can possible use and then some.

Jack’s Harvest starts babies off on the right nutritional foot and provides a delicious and nutrition alternative to jarred baby food.  Jacks’ Harvest makes a great gift  for parents who plan to make their own baby food as well.  It is always nice to have some in the freezer for those days when it is just too much to make baby food.  You know those days when it’s really too much energy to wash your face and brush your teeth!

Mother’s Day Recap

imagesHappy Day After Mother’s Day!  I hope all of you had a wonderful day and were treated like the queen you are.  I had a lovely day with the requisite breakfast in bed.  My kiddos,  with a lot of assistance, made me Papplesauce Crepes and they were delicious.  They were much better then the ‘Cherry Smashies’ Lucy made for  me one year.  They consisted of mini marshmallows topped with maraschino cherries all on a toothpick for easy snacking.  They were as horrible as they sound and I managed to choke down three (this all happened at 5 AM on a mother’s day past, BTW because Lucy NEVER slept – she was like the girl in the movie The Ring) before giving up and conceding defeat.  Here is the recipe they used (give or take) and they were DELICIOUS!

images

Papplesauce Crepes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 8-10 cubes of Papplesauce warmed
  • Creme Fraiche

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add the salt and butter; beat until smooth.
  2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.
  3. Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.
  4. Fill with warmed Papplesauce
  5. Serve hot with a dollop of creme fraiche.

You Don’t Actually Have To Suffer For Beauty

imagesI am the first to admit that I really like sparkly, pretty things.  I love sky high heels, make up and all the girly stuff that goes along with it.  What Idon’t love is all the preservatives, parabens, petrochemicals and the like that go into many of the beauty products on the market.  However, I usually find the natural alternatives just aren’t current, edgy or they don’t work as well as their chemical filled counterparts, so what’s an organic fashion maven to do?  Find great products that “get it” but also “GET IT.”  Here are a few of my favorites.

LacqLovers09Front

Butter Nail Products this London based product has their Three Free nail laquers (I love the word laquer – everything sounds better in London, doesn’t it?).  With colors like Chimney Sweep (a gorgeous sparkly grey) and HRH (a royal purple even the Queen would love) you will have the chicest nails around without Formaldahyde, Toluene or DBP.  I am wearing Muggins right now and got stopped by four different people yesterday to ask me what OPI color I was wearing.  Not OPI, ladies, Butter!

Sally B’s Skin Yummies this Atlanta based company makes a full complement of beauty, body and makeup products that truly are YUMMY.  Everything is all natural, hand made by Sally and just the best stuff you have ever tried.  lipyummy-largeI love her lip balms they taste great and I don’t mind my kids using them because they are made from Organic Castor Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter – not a petrochemical in sight.  I love the lip balm of the month club, get a new flavor lip balm every month – how cool is that.  With flavors like Ginger Peach, Star Anise and Lavender Grapefruit you will have the tastiest lips on the block.

Organic and natural hair products are the hardest ones for me.  I have tried so many and had my color stripped and my hair dried out.  Finally, through Sephora.com’s Natural and Organic link I found the Phyto line of hair care products.P38275_hero No drying, no stripping, just fresh, clean and perfectly conditioned hair.

I am thrilled whenever I find products that let me indulge my fashionista side while not offending my green side.  If you have a favorite green personal care product that you love, SHARE it with us, PLEASE!

Answers to the Age Old Question: What’s for Dinner

Author Jeanne Muchnick has the answer to the question WHAT ARE WE GOING TO EAT FOR DINNER in her book Dinner for Busy Moms.  It is full of great recipes, tips and tricks for getting your pickiest eaters to eat submitted by moms and dads.  I happen to have submitted my Unarguable 12 rule and it is on page 145, but that isn’t the ONLY reason I love this book, really, it isn’t.

You know what a huge fan I am of Jamie Oliver and his push to revolutionize the way we eat and feed our children, but those of us charged with cooking every night know it isn’t always easy to figure out what in the world to serve.  It is easy to get into a food rut where Mondays are spaghetti night, Tuesdays are baked chicken with rice, and so on. Armed with this great book you can shake things up around your dinner table a bit and get out that rut!

You can preview the book at http://www.dinnerforbusymoms.com.

International Composting Week

I know you already have this marked and highlighted on your calendars, but I am going to mention it just in case you have forgotten.  It is International Compost Week!  We compost all the organic kitchen waste both at my kitchen at home as well as our commercial kitchen.  It is so easy and really takes no time at all to do.  There are various ways of composting and about a million different products that you can buy to create your compost heap.  We just made a frame and covered it with chicken wire – it ain’t fancy, but it does the trick.  There are also compost tumblers that are supposed to get your scraps to that rich amazing compost quicker but you don’t need to spend a lot of money to make this happen.  I keep a scrap bowl like Rachel Ray does in my kitchen and all organic matter that is left over after making a meal goes in the bowl.  I run it out to the compost heap at the end of the day when I take out the regular trash.  Add some green stuff (grass clippings are great) and some brown stuff (leaves, pine needles, bark), water it during dry spells and turn it every once and in a while.  I have two section for compost as I have a lot of scraps going in from the Jack’s Harvest kitchen.  Once one gets filled to the point where it is getting hard to turn it, I start adding the scaps to the other side.

My garden is amazing.  Green vibrant, lush and very resilient.  I have wanted to grow my favorite flower Peonies for ages and was never able to get them to mature and bloom.  They are so beautiful this year and I have filled my house with those extravagant and fragrant flowers and I know it is because the soil they are growing in is so nutrient dense.  Our vegetable garden is essentially care free.  I pull a few weeds, make sure it’s getting water and reap the harvest as it comes in.  Last year we were bringing baskets full of produce to all of our neighbors and the herb side of the garden flavored many an amazing meal around my block last summer.

So if you need more information about how to get started, go to this link http://www.compostingcouncil.org/ and see all the tips and tricks they have.  If you don’t feel like making a compost structure yourself and really who has time for that, I get a lot of great stuff from Gardener’s Supply Company.  San Francisco has an initiative to have zero trash by 2014 they will put compost bins in every house like your recycling bins and have a pick up for compost and recycling.  It can be done and it really take no effort and the benefits to your garden and the planet are well worth it!

Happy Composting!
